Historical Origins
| No one is quite sure when and where the Tarot Cards originated but it is safe to say that they have been around for centuries. The actual Tarot as we know it today dates back to fourteenth-century Italy where a nobleman commissioned a hand painted deck as a present for his daughter on the occasion of her marriage. |
| From the beginning of time, man has always sought a way to foretell the future. Divination was a valuable tool used for very different reasons than it is used for today. Back in the days when humans lived by the cycles of nature survival from year to year was a constant source of concern and foremost in the minds of all. Would the coming winter be hard, would there be enough fodder to feed their livestock if conditions deteriorated, would there be enough supplies to sustain the tribe, would the land yield well, would the rains come in time? During the dark cold days the tribe would gather round the fire and cast sticks or stones with carved out markings on them. These markings were predetermined answers to their questions and the reading would be based on where the sticks or stones fell. These methods of divination although crude, formed the basis for our modern day methods of fortune telling. |
 |
| Be it the Tarot cards or the Rune Stones a common thread runs through them all. The images or markings have universal meaning and have been around for so long they contain an energy, which resonates with all. The concept of The Collective Unconscious or Universal Knowledge or Memory supports the explanation why the Tarot Cards or other forms of divination can be uncannily accurate. |
The Tarot and the Supernatural
| Contrary to common belief Tarot Card reading works not with interference or input from the spirit world (although this can happen too) but from the subconscious or higher self of the individual seeking guidance. |
| Deep within our subconscious and superconscious resides all the advice, knowledge, answers and solutions to our every problem or issue but very few of us are highly enlightened or spiritually developed enough to access this information on a conscious basis. This information often surfaces in an abstract way during dreamtime when our subconscious or higher self struggles to filter important information to us. When we sleep our conscious everyday waking self lets down its guard and censorship thus allowing the subconscious to become more active. Without the interference of the conscious, the subconscious is free to filter messages to us. These messages are transmitted to us in the form of dreams. However, the subconscious does not communicate in the same language as the conscious. Information received during dreamtime is often shrouded or buried in symbolism metaphors and archetypes. |
|
| If we are trained in dream interpretation or symbolism we can unravel the message quite similar to reading the cards. However, just like the Tarot Cards each person’s reaction to or interpretation of a dream will vary. Each dream or card reading is unique to the individual with special meaning for the person involved, but at the same time it will carry symbolism and messages that we can all identify with. |
| When we shuffle the cards and ask a question we infuse the cards with the energy of the question and when selecting the cards for a reading it is the subconscious or higher self that encourages us to choose certain cards. It is then the challenge for the reader to interpret the cards thus giving voice to the subconscious. Because the information received is personal and individual to the querant, the querant can greatly help by assisting in interpreting their own reading. This happens when the querant is especially drawn to or affected by the imagery or symbolism of a particular card or cards in a reading. What they see in the card may hit very close to home and it is very wise of them to communicate this to the reader. After all we all have the answers to our own problems; we all have the ability to heal ourselves. In saying this Tarot Card readers often work on a psychic or intuitive basis along with the normal interpretation of the cards. The more one reads the more the intuitive and psychic side kicks in. Some readers also work with spirit guides who provide them with very detailed information for the querant, which they can add to a reading. So the Tarot works on many levels with the input from the subconscious, the interpretation by the Tarot reader, communication and self interpretation from the querant, natural intuition and psychic awareness and even spirit guide or angelic assistance. |
How the Tarot Can Helps Us
| Used as a self-development tool, the Tarot can empower us to achieve greater fulfilment in our lives and enable us to develop our full potential. It removes the blame aspect which we all tend to gravitate towards and forces us to take responsibility for our thoughts, actions and deeds. Amazing results can be obtained when the cards are approached from a spiritual point of view. Deep underlying patterns of behaviour or attitude are laid bare for inspection and dissection and the concept of cause and effect becomes all too obvious. After all, whatever we send out in life always comes back to us whether we want it or not. The cards show us that we are the orchestrators of our own destiny, be it good, or bad. We create our own realities with our thoughts, behaviour and feelings. Depending on how we view our reality, determines whether we consider our life is either positive or negative. |
|
| The cards force us to take responsibility for our lives, as we have no one to blame but ourselves. We sow our own seeds. Depending on what type of soil we choose to sow them in and whether we take care to tend them well, removing weeds and regular watering will determine what we will harvest and whether it will be a welcome one or not. |
| The cards expose us for who we truly are and not who we portray ourselves to be. There is nowhere to hide as we are shown in our full glory, warts and all. A good reader will gently point out negative areas or repetitive patterns of behaviour that are causing problems delays or blockages in the querant’s life. The cards will also give constructive advice on how to let go of pain, grief, hurt, attitudes and patterns of behaviour that do not serve our higher good. As all humans have the gift of free will, the cards will never tell you what to do, rather they will offer suggestions and options. It is up to the querant to take on board that what they wish and dismiss the rest. |
 |
| The cards work on the basis of the probable outcome of events influenced by the current actions, attitude and behaviour of the querant. We can almost always change an unwelcome outcome by changing the way we think, act and feel. We can be a victim to our circumstances or we can liberate ourselves. We cannot force change on anyone else but when we change ourselves the world around us changes and reacts to us in a different way. |
The Cards
| The Tarot Deck consists of 78 cards. 56 Minor Arcana (little secrets) and 22 Major Arcana (big secrets). Most Decks also contain a blank card which has its own meaning. Each card is multi-layered in meaning. |
The Minor Arcana
| The Minor Arcana deal with the everyday aspects of our lives and depict the flux and flow of variables and characters at play and passing issues. The Minor Arcana is further broken down into 4 groups of 14 cards known as Suits. These Suits are also linked to the elements. They are as follows, |
|
Wands – Fire Element |
|
Cups – Water Element |
|
Swords – Air Element |
|
Pentacles – Earth Element |
| Each Suit tells it own story or journey influenced by the energy of its governing element. |
| The Four Suits also contain the Court Cards. The Court Cards which, consist of a Page, Knight, Queen and King in each Suit, depict the querant themselves or characters involved with the querant having an influence either for good or bad on the querant situation. The Court Cards can also refer to the energy the particular character in the card offers. This energy may be what the querant needs to adopt or bring to the situation for things to work out in their favour. Again it is up to the reader to determine if it is a character or an energy, and whether it is having a negative or positive influence. |
| Cards can also be reversed and when this happens their meaning alters. Sometimes it negates the positive meaning of the upright card and improves the meaning in more negative cards or it can point to excesses or lack of the energy suggested by the upright, blind spots, blocks, delays or the shadow side. |

The Major Arcana
| The 22 Major Arcana contain deeper meanings and hold spiritual lessons for us. They represent inherent aspects of our character and carry more serious issues or messages. They highlight underlying lessons or themes in the many aspects of our lives such as family, relationships, career and how we view ourselves. |
We all come into this world with certain Karmic issues to be resolved in our lifetime. Each Astrological sign also has a particular lesson or challenge that they need to master. The Major Arcana are these lessons. They are often aspects of our character that we do not wish made public and can often be aspects of ourselves that we are in denial about. Our spiritual gifts and personal strengths we bring to our lives and the lives of others are also highlighted within the strong imagery. The 12 different zodiac signs are especially represented in the Major Arcana.
If a reading contains four or more Major Arcana cards then the querant must prepare for a very spiritual reading indeed. The Major Arcana takes us on a journey from birth in the Fool, to the ultimate achievement of the World Card but as with all meanings in the Tarot, nothing ever stays the same, |
|
| everything changes and moves on, so reaching the World card does not mean that you have nothing left to achieve, rather it signals that one must, through rebirth, go back to the beginning as we are constant students, never fully graduating from the college of life. Just when we suspect we know everything the energies change around us again leaving more questions to be answered, aspects of our character yet to be discovered and more journeys to be undertaken. However, if we have reached the World card and are preparing to embark on another voyage of discovery the Universe will expect us to pack and take on board all that we have learnt in our efforts to arrive at the World card so that we can put it to good use along the way. Likewise, if there were certain lessons we failed to learn in our previous journey the Universe will give us ample opportunities to overcome them too. |
| The Major Arcana symbolically charts our developmental progress in life and one can experience the sense of maturity and transition as the Fool journeys from 0 to the World in card 22. To master all these lessons is to gain a wonderful balanced view of life, oneself, unconditional love for the rest of humanity, the earth we live on and all its natural creatures, together with a deep spiritual understanding of our connection within the universe. |
What the Cards will not Tell You or Cannot do
|
The Lotto numbers Remove Spells or Curses. |
|
|
Make someone love you who doesn’t or stop a partner leaving you who is hell bent on going. |
|
They will not tell you to stop taking medications or to start taking certain medications. |
|
They will detail the past, look into the future and highlight the underlying causes but they will not tell you what to do. Nor will they tell you exactly what is going to happen. The outcome or answer in a Tarot reading is not absolute and not set in stone. Even at the best of times a reading is only 70% accurate. |
|
A good reader will not interfere with the free will of the querant. |
Warning
| Paranoia, desire, denial and poorly worded questions will interfere with and muddy a reading. Strong emotions or an overriding desire may force an inaccurate reading. Try to remain as detached as possible from a desired outcome. It is not a good idea to book a Tarot reading if you are too emotional or angry as any advice the reading may have will be lost on you. |
How Long will it Take?
| A Card Reading Lasts approximately 1 hour. During that time you will expect to have approximately three readings covered. |
